5 Logo Designs Using Negative Space & Hidden Meaning
Logo designs are not all created equally. Many common brand logos we see every day have a hidden meaning that you may not have noticed before. These hidden messages can be associated with the brand, company, or the logo.
One way to deliver a hidden message within a logo is with the use of negative space. The use of negative space to create illusions and hidden messages in modern day brands are more prolific than you might think. You may see these brands several times in one day, but do you see ALL of it.

Brand & Logo with a Numerical Hidden Message
Who wants Ice cream? We all do. How many times have you been to America’s favorite Ice cream store? Now think of how many flavors of ice cream Baskin-Robbins serves.
The fact is they serve 31 flavors of ice cream. Now that you know that, look at the logo again and take a look at the B and R in the center of the company’s logo.
Using the color pink they are passing on either an obvious or subliminal message. The use of contrasting colors creates the hidden message in this logo. At first glance, did you notice the number 31? Now that you have seen it, can you not see it?
Wendy’s Intentional Logo Message or Not?
Do you see the secret message hidden in Wendy’s logo? Buried in the ruffles of the little girl’s collar some people see the word “mom” spelled out.
When first discovered by online users, the prevailing theory was that the company snuck the word in there to associate their food with mom’s home cooking. Others think it was done to pay homage to the founder, Dave Thomas’s actual mother. So was this Dave’s plan?
Wendy’s has since stated that the word was an unintentional result of the logo design. We can chalk this one up to a happy accident.

Dr. Dre Beats Logo Design Simple and Subtle
The Beats by Dre logo is little more than just a red circle with the letter b inside of it. Or is it? Beats Electronics is a consumer audio products manufacturer created by Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine. Since 2014, it has been an Apple subsidiary.
Knowing this one may think that the logo represents a vinyl record. The shape is created by having the letter b centered in the middle of a circle. However, the graphic designer or designers here, mention that the red circle is actually supposed to represent a human’s head. The letter b then represents a pair of Beats headphones over a person’s ear.
Take another look. Do you see the profile view of the person’s head and the headphones that they are wearing?
Clever Use of Negative Space in a Logo
The Bronx Zoo in New York City is primarily dedicated to animal exhibits. Logic would dictate that their logo would feature animals and a few flying birds. That’s pretty obvious when you first glance at the logo for The Bronx Zoo above.
Bearing in mind that the Bronx is a borough in NYC, why not flaunt the Manhattan skyline. If you look again you will see how the logo very cleverly incorporates just that. With the use of negative space in between the giraffes’ legs, the logo is doubling down on the NYC factor.
Amazon Logo Design From A to Z
The “arrow” in the Amazon logo has a very specific purpose. Take a look at the arrow and the direction it is facing. Do you notice the arrow’s relation to the letter it leads from and to?
Look at the logo carefully, you’ll see that the arrow connects the letter A to the letter Z.
The intended message here from the designers is, come to amazon and you’ll find everything you need from A to Z.
