You can achieve printing on gray fabric by printing the entire cover through the dye-sublimation method; or if screen printing or using a heat transfer.

Understanding the digital printing process helps to understand why gray seems to be the unicorn of printed fabric colors.

It also helps to understand how tablecloths are manufactured during production. Here, we will explain and discuss how the printing process affects the choice of gray as a fabric color.

Did you know that there are 256 different shades of gray?

There are over 250 different shades of gray. It is generated on screen using RGB and printed using a mixture of CMYK.

A true gray color is actually the lack of color, a mixture of white and black.

Printing in CMYK can cause the color gray to come out slightly blue or green.

This is dependent on the values within the art file and the equipment being used to print. Spot colors are used in the printing world in place of CMYK and will produce a more accurate gray.

Front Panel Print Dye-Sublimated Tablecloths

To manufacture a front panel sublimated tablecloth, one printed panel is sewn together with other panels.

The other panels have been previously dyed. The background color of the printed panel is printed using CMYK to match the other panels.

Some fabric colors are harder to match with ink than others and gray is one of the most difficult.

This means that once constructed the front panel which is printed will not accurately match the other panels. The color may be slightly darker or lighter.

For this reason, the gray fabric is not offered for front panel printed, dye-sublimated tablecloths among a few other colors.

All-Over Logo Printed Tablecloths

If a gray fabric is not offered for front panel printed tablecloths, how then can you obtain a gray printed tablecloth?

You will need a tablecloth that includes an all-over print, also known as a full-dye sublimated tablecloth.

This will ensure the color is uniform throughout.

With a tablecloth that is printed all over, the entire surface area is printed. This includes the background color if you are printing a simple logo only.

By printing the entire surface area at once the color is laid down evenly causing a uniform color.

With all-over printed tablecloths you can print the cover to match any of a thousand colors.

There is no limit to the color combinations, are not limited to “in-stock fabric colors”.

Other Ways to Print on Gray Fabric

There are other ways to achieve a uniform gray for your printed table cover.

You can print on a gray colored tablecloth when screen printing or when using a heat transfer to print.

When screen printing, ink is painted directly on top of the fabric.

Screen printing comes with some limitations in regards to what can be printed but due to the process, you can print on a uniform fabric color.

Another way to print on a uniform gray color is to print using a heat-applied vinyl or heat transfer.

Heat transfers are like ironed-on stickers which are pressed onto the surface area.

Since the print is going directly on top of the fabric, like with screen printing, you can print on a gray fabric color and not have to worry about the different panels matching.

Next time you are told, “we can not print on gray fabric” you will be the wiser.

You now know that depending on the method of printing employed and the construction process it is possible to print on gray fabric.

Gray is not the only color which is difficult to match for front panel printed tablecloths.

Digitally Printed Stretch Covers

At Logoclothz, we use a printing method called sublimation for our stretch table covers. This makes a long-lasting and durable product which can be machine-washed.

The material used to manufacture the covers starts out completely white before production. During production, the cover is printed, including the selected fabric color, and then sewn together. This means that if you select a red printed cover, the entire cover would be printed in red.

NFPA Fire Certified Event School & Trade Show Ready Tablecloths

NFPA 701 – Use the results of NFPA 701 to assess the propagation of flame of various textiles and films under specified fire conditions. The test methods included apply to curtains, window shades, draperies, table linens, textile wall hangings as well as to fabrics used in the assembly of awnings, tents, tarps and other similar architectural fabric structures and banners.

Fabrics used in most public spaces (including schools, churches, auditoriums, theatres, and more.) is required by law in many states and cities to be certified as flame retardant, according to standards developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

NFPA has various standards depending on how the fabric will be used. In the case of draperies, curtains, and similar hanging textiles, the standard that applies is NFPA 701: Standard Methods of Fire Tests for Flame Propagation of Textiles and Films.

This test measures the flammability of a fabric when it is exposed to specific sources of ignition. 


NFPA 701 (Small Scale) testing measures the ignition resistance of a fabric after it is exposed to a flame for 12 seconds. The flame, char length, and flaming residue are recorded. The fabric will pass the test if all samples meet the following criteria:

  1. An after flame of less than 2.0 seconds
  2. a char length of less than 6.5”
  3. the specimen does not continue to flame after reaching the floor of the test chamber

Fabric certified as flame retardant is certified to have been tested and passed the NFPA 701 test.

What is a table skirt? Table skirts like tablecloths are used to dress tables in a stylish way. They cover only the sides of a table and adhere to it using table skirt clips and Velcro™.

On each side of the flat printed panel, the fabric is bunched up creating a ruffled effect.

How Many Feet of Skirting Do I Need to Cover my Table?

The first thing to do when determining your printed table skirt length is to decide how many sides of the table you are covering.

You can cover all 4 sides or just 3 sides leaving an opening in the back for storage. Having an open back is also ideal for when you are sitting behind the table and will keep any fabric from resting on your legs.

The next thing to do when figuring what size table wrap you need is to determine the height.

logo Printed table skirts can be custom made for different size applications such as bars, carts, performance stages, and more. Tables are also made at different sizes, often 30″ tall, 36″, or 42″ tall.

To find the length of table skirting you need, simply measure each side of the table you are covering. Then add these totals together. The sum of these totals will equal the length of table skirting you need.

If covering four sides use the following formula: Width + Width + Length + Length = X
If leaving the backside open use the following formula: Width + Width + Length = X

Once you decide how many sides of a table you are covering you can determine the length of table skirting you need. Just make sure to confirm the table height.

While great for places like company offices, venues, party halls, universities, and conference centers, table skirts can be difficult to deal with.

Like most things that look unique and flashy, there is a bit more involved to make your table skirt work for you. Once you know the size of your table, the table lip measurements and have a place to store them, the rest can be very easy.

It’s traveling with printed table skirts that can be difficult. To be honest, they are bulky and take up a lot of space.

If traveling you would need to pack the table skirt clips and then hope they fit the table you are being provided. Table skirts may not be the best solution for your trade show or any fundraiser where the tables are provided.

The Printing Process for Logo Printed Table Wraps Explained

All of the printed table skirts offered at Logoclothz are digitally printed through the dye-sublimation print method.

This includes the entire table skirt, even the pleating. This ensures a uniform color throughout the entire length of your table skirt.

During production, we start with a completely white piece of fabric cut to your specifications.

The white polyester material is then fused with ink during the sublimation print method. The table skirt is then finished in the style selected, whether regular, flat wrap, or box pleating.

Many table skirts offered in the industry include a front, flat printed panel which is attached to “pre-colored” fabric on both sides.

This can result in a slight variation in color from the printed panel to the other panels which make the skirt.

If you are printing on a table skirt it is very important to know your table size. Your table size will ultimately determine your imprint size.

If you put a table skirt with a 72″ wide print and use it on a 6ft table, you would not have any pleating on either side of the print.

A high quality branded tablecloth will be made from 100% polyester and made in the United States. It will also have a high thread count. The higher the thread count, the thicker the fabric will be.

Methods of printing also affect the quality of a branded tablecloth. Dye sublimation is quickly becoming the standard method for printing tablecloths.

Ink is fused into the fabric during this printing process which makes for a long-lasting and durable item. You can machine wash a dye sublimated table cover and not have to worry about the ink washing away.

Other methods of printing are achieved by applying ink or vinyl to the surface of an object. Screen printing and heat transfers do not hold up as well over time and tend to wash away and crack.

It’s not to confuse anyone or to make them think we are smarter than we actually are. We use those words to explain how to best prepare an art file for print.

In the following, we will specifically talk about the imprint area. We will discuss why they are important, what they mean to a designer, and what affects an imprint area.

Lastly, we will discuss the difference between imprint area and print location.

Imprint Area

When printing on a t-shirt, pen, tablecloth, or any promotional item there will be a designated area to print on. This designated printing area is known as the imprint area.

It is the suggested space in which you should be placing your logo, artwork, or design for print. It will be designated by a guideline or guidelines in an editable template.

An imprint area will be determined by the item you are printing on and the method of printing employed.

Why are Imprint Areas Important?

Imprint areas are put in place to provide the best print possible while maximizing its size. They are guides to use when designing your artwork. Certain methods of printing have size restrictions such as screen printing and heat transfers.

An imprint area will be put in place to accommodate any restrictions. If a design element is placed outside of the imprint area then it may be cut off during production.

During production, materials and ink expand and contract. Imprint areas, when used properly, will prevent anything from being cut off during production.

An imprint area is determined by the size of an object being printed on. Promotional pens will have a very small imprint area while logo printed table covers will have a much larger one. The surface area of a table cover is much greater than that of a pen.

Nowadays with the addition of large format printers, larger prints are better achieved through digital printing.
